Picking a Class

The most important part of the character creation process is picking a class to play as. All races can play all classes. Each class is unique and plays differently from any other class. Following is brief breakdown of the various classes, what they do, how difficult it is to play them (using my own difficulty scale, not the game’s), as well as a video of them in action. Base stats were borrowed from TERAblah.

~ Tanking Classes ~

> Lancer <

The Lancer is the archetypical MMO tanking class. Wearing heavy armor and wielding a lance and a large shield, they have the highest defense stat in the game. A Lancer’s job is keeping aggro on monsters and actively blocking their attacks. The Lancer is slow in combat and relies on charges to move quickly while engaged in battle. The Lancer can block almost all incoming damage if they time their blocks right. Of the two tanks, the Lancer is the easiest to play (but is by no means an easy class, overall). Solo difficulty: 2/5. Group difficulty: 4/5.  Base stats:

> Warrior <

The Warrior is the second tanking class in the game. They have the fastest in combat movement speed of all classes, as well as the highest pool of HP. However, they wear medium armor and can be fragile. A Warrior is an evasion tank. They actively utilize their flip, attacks with invincibility frames, and shouts to avoid and interrupt bosses as they hold aggro with cries and moderate damage output. The Warrior is able to run circles around enemies, avoiding all attacks. They dual-wield short swords while in combat. The Warrior is arguably one of the most difficult classes to play in TERA online, and the harder of the two tanking classes. Solo difficulty: 3/5. Group difficulty: 5/5. Base stats:

~ Damage Classes ~

> Berserker <

The Berserker is a melee DPS and pseudo crowd control. Equipped with many slow, heavy-hitting attacks that have a chance to knock enemies down, they can wreak havoc on large numbers of enemies an single monsters alike. The Berserker shares the distinction of being the slowest moving class in the game with Lancer, but unlike the Lancer does not have a charge to move quickly while in combat. At a later level they get the ability to use a short sprint, but it only offsets their sluggishness by a small amount. To make up for their inherit slow movement speed, they are equipped with heavy armor and a block, giving them the third highest defense in the game. The Berserker mainly focuses on knocking enemies over and causing heavy damage to large numbers of monsters. While soloing, the Berserker is third only to the Priest and Archer in terms of difficulty. However, in a group situation the slow movement speed makes the class very difficult to play. Solo difficulty: 1/5. Group difficulty: 4/5. Base stats:

Vitality Stats
HP: 650
MP: 0/100
MP Regen Rate: +10 per second while in combat, -20 per second while out of combat.

> Slayer <

The Slayer is the second melee DPS class in TERA. The Slayer is deft in combat, and can move quickly through enemy formations by stringing together combo attacks and utilizing their roll. The Slayer wears medium armor, and thus can be frail while engaged in combat. They mainly focus on AoE damage, and their far-reaching whirling arc attacks emphasize that focus. The Slayer is a difficult solo class because of its lack of a self-healing ability and relatively low defenses, and can be difficult to play in groups lacking a healer. Solo difficulty: 4/5. Group difficulty: 3/5. Base stats:

Vitality Stats
HP: 648
MP: 0/100
MP Regen Rate: +10 per second while in combat, -20 per second while out of combat.

> Archer <

The Archer is a single-target DPS class with limited crowd control abilities. They are capable of very high damage output in short periods of time. They wear medium armor and despite that fact, boast the second-highest defense stat in the game. Although they have a low HP pool, their hardiness and maneuverability makes up for that shortcoming. Archers mainly focus on doing high amounts of damage very quickly to monsters. Overall, they’re the easiest class to play in the game in both solo and group settings. Their slows and high damage output make them ideal for kiting, and as a result they can solo pretty much everything in the sans instances with little problem. In a group setting they can easily keep their distance and put big damage on monsters with little chance of harm coming to them as long as they remain attentive. Solo difficulty: 1/5. Group difficulty: 1/5. Base stats:

Vitality Stats
HP: 598
MP: 50/50
MP Regen Rate: +5 per second in and out of combat.

> Sorcerer <

The Sorcerer is a glass cannon DPS class. Extremely high damage output spread out evenly among their skills makes them most consistent DPS class in the game, keeping a constant stream of AoE and single target damage on enemies. Their damage output is offset by their frailty – they have the lowest defense stat in the game. One hit and it’s pretty much over for a Sorcerer. Their limited ability to slow is a shortcoming that can make soloing a risky endeavor, but in group settings they are able to keep their distance and damage from afar. Solo difficulty: 3/5. Group difficulty: 2/5. Base stats:

Vitality Stats
HP: 582
MP: 200/200
MP Regen Rate: +10 per second in and out of combat.

~ Support Classes ~

> Mystic <

The Mystic is hybrid class that performs many different things at once. They buff, off-heal, resurrect, crowd control, and can off-tank by using their pets. However, they have a low HP pool and low defenses. Not only that, but they have the lowest damage output in the game. The Mystic is a very difficult class to play and be proficient at. Their main focus is to keep the group in fighting shape, by topping off HP and MP, buffing, and smoothing out fights by dispelling monster buffs and crowd controlling. While soloing their terrible damage output can make fights drag on and in group settings they can be stretched thin by trying to perform everything that they’re capable of. Overall, they are the most difficult class in the game. Solo difficulty: 5/5. Group difficulty: 5/5. Base stats:

> Priest <

The Priest is a healing class with buffing abilities. They are the main healers in TERA Online. Focusing on buffing allies and keeping everyone at full health, they also have the ability to resurrect should things go sour. No downtime when soloing makes them one of the easiest solo classes in the game, however, while in group situations, especially during boss fights, they can be incredibly difficult to play. Solo difficulty: 1/5. Group difficulty: 5/5. Base stats:

Vitality Stats

Choosing a Race

The first step of the character creation process is choosing a race to play as. In total, there are seven races in the game.

The seven races of TERA.

Amani (Male), Amani (Female), Baraka (Genderless), Castanic (Female), Castanic (Male), High Elf (Female), High Elf (Male), Human (Female), Human (Male), Popori (Male only), Elin (Female only)

All races can play all classes. Outside of cosmetic differences, different races have different hitboxes. A smaller race might be harder to hit in PvP, but at the same time it will have more trouble receiving heals, as they are easily hidden by boss monsters or in large crowds. On top of visual and hitbox differences, each race (except the Elin and Popori, who share the same abilities) has unique Racial Abilities. They are follows.

Human

Expert Duelist (Active): For 3 minutes, it will lower the chance of reactive abilities (when you knock someone down, they won’t be able to recover immediately) during PVP by 50%.
Will of Humans (Passive): When your HP goes below 30% you will take 10% less damage during PVP.
Diligence (Passive): It takes 10% less time to craft Light Armor.

Castanic

Runic Awakening (Active): When in combat your movement speed will be increased by 35 for 3 minutes. When attacked your attack speed will be slowed for a short period of time and after the movement speed buff will be canceled.
Master of Ambush (Passive): When attacking from behind, your critical chance is increased by 1%.
Acrobatic (Passive): Decreases fall damage by 50%.

Aman

Veteran Fighter (Active): For 30 seconds, lowers the chance to get knocked down / paralyzed by 70%.
Descendant of Davan (Passive): When your HP goes below 30%, your defense increases.
Strength (Passive): Increased chance to resist status ailments.

Popori/Elin

Friend of Nature (Active): When used before you are in combat, you will not be attacked first by monsters for a minute. It cannot be activated during combat, and disappears if you enter it or use another skill.
Joy of traveling (Active): When used, your out of combat movement speed is increased for three minutes.
Child of the Lake (Passive): Swimming speed increased by 50%.

Baraka

Nature Fuse (Active): Instantly heal 100% of your maximum HP.
Optimist (Passive): The lowest your vitality can go is 20%, instead of 0%.
Keeping Calm (Passive): Increased chance to resist slows.

High Elf

Activate Core (Active): Instantly restore 100% of your maximum MP.
Core’s Blessing (Passive): When resurrected, you get an MP regeneration buff.
Essence Collector (Passive): You gather plants 15% faster.

Unless you’re going to be focusing on PvP or plan on playing a tanking class the race you choose really has no effect on the game. Most active Racial Abilities are on hour-long cooldowns, and as such the passives are really what’s going to matter in the long run. I’ve translated the Race Selection screen, which you can see below.

After you choose a race, you’re ready to pick a class and make your character.

Selecting a Server

There are no distinctions made between PvP and PvE servers in TERA. PvP is controlled by the guild who is in charge of an area. They can decide whether they want to flag it for PvP or not. In a PvP-flagged area player killing is possible. I’m unsure if it can be enabled on lower level zones but when you get above level 30 I’m pretty sure that it’s possible. In any case, you can see the server GAF is on by checking out this image:

The (8) is merely an indication of how many characters I have on the server, and can be ignored. It’s likely that the server will be at a different position on the list, so make sure you match the Hangul perfectly. Once you select a server, you’re ready to choose a race and a class, then make your character.
